The Brothers Grimm
2005, directed by Terry Gilliam, starring Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Peter Stormare, Lena Headey, MacKenzie Crook, Jonathan Pryce,

Oh dear oh dear oh dear – sadly this film lives up to the third word of its title, something I found particularly disappointing as I've long been a fan of director Terry Gilliam's work. I've heard others say this is not a proper Terry Gilliam film and I understand the meaning, there is a serious sense of the master of the slightly zany being restrained in all the wrong places. There is some true Gilliam-esque evidence – the tarry black monster that crawls out of the village well is typical Terry, but overall the film plods along at a despressing pace. Except that is Peter Stormare, as Cavaldi, who over-acts at such frenetic rate he seems to carry around his own personal power supply. Finally the film is lit in a nasty bleached manner that gives it the impression of being left out too long in the sun. You should leave it on the shelf, but if you must watch it, make sure you have a copy of something such as Time Bandits to hand to remind yourself what Gilliam is capable of.
